新視界大學(xué)英語(yǔ)第二冊(cè)第四單元的話題是動(dòng)物,為了拓展學(xué)生的相關(guān)英語(yǔ)文化背景知識(shí),筆者與學(xué)生一起搜集了一些有關(guān)動(dòng)物的習(xí)語(yǔ)。習(xí)語(yǔ)以其鮮明生動(dòng)的形象以及精煉簡(jiǎn)潔的語(yǔ)言很快就吸引了興趣盎然的學(xué)生,為了使更多同學(xué)能夠了解飽含民族特色的英語(yǔ)習(xí)語(yǔ),特將收集到的習(xí)語(yǔ)分享如下:
。1)英漢文化意象相同或相似的,可以采取直譯的習(xí)語(yǔ)。
as sly as a fox狐貍般狡猾的 as strong as an ox強(qiáng)壯如牛的
as timid as a mouse 膽小如鼠的 as light as feather輕如鴻毛
as busy as a bee忙的團(tuán)團(tuán)轉(zhuǎn)(蜜蜂) as fat as a pig非常胖(豬)
as blind as a bat完全看不見(jiàn)東西(蝙蝠) as brave as a lion非常勇猛 (獅子)
as gentle as a lamb性情溫順的(羊) as hungry as a wolf非常餓(狼)
as quiet as a mouse悄沒(méi)聲的(老鼠)
Once the tree falls, the monkeys on it will flee helter-skelter.樹(shù)倒猢猻散。
Kill two birds with one stone.一石雙鳥(niǎo);一箭雙雕;一舉兩得。
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.雙鳥(niǎo)在林不如一鳥(niǎo)在手。
Each bird loves to hear himself sing.鳥(niǎo)兒都愛(ài)聽(tīng)自己唱。(自我欣賞)
You cannot catch old birds with chaff.用粗糠捉不住老鳥(niǎo)。(有經(jīng)驗(yàn)的人難騙。)
A bird is known by its note, and a man by his talk.聽(tīng)音識(shí)鳥(niǎo),聞言識(shí)人。
Birds in their little nests agree.同巢之鳥(niǎo)心兒齊。
A cat has nine lives.貓有九條命;吉人天相。
All cats are grey in the dark.黑暗之中貓都是灰色的。(人未出名時(shí)看起來(lái)都差不多。)
When the weasel and the cat make a marriage, it is a very ill presage. 黃鼠狼和貓結(jié)親,不是好事情。
A gloved cat catches no mice.戴手套的貓,老鼠抓不到。(不愿吃苦的人成不了大事業(yè)。)
The cat shuts its eyes when stealing cream.貓偷吃奶油的時(shí)候總是閉著眼睛。(掩耳盜鈴)
Who will bell the cat? 誰(shuí)去給貓系鈴?(誰(shuí)愿意為大家冒風(fēng)險(xiǎn)?)
There are more ways of killing a cat than by choking it with butter. 殺貓的辦法很多。(達(dá)到目的的途徑很多。)
Care kills a cat.憂慮愁死貓。
When the cat away, the mouse will play.貓兒一跑,老鼠就鬧。
Curiosity kills the cat.好奇害死貓。
Too much pudding will choke a dog.布丁太多噎死狗。
Dead dogs bite not.死狗不咬人。
All are not thieves that dogs bark at.狗見(jiàn)了叫的不一定都是賊。(不要以貌取人。)
Barking dogs don’t (seldom) bite.愛(ài)叫的狗很少咬人。
Every dog is a lion at home.狗在家門(mén)口就成了獅子。
Don’t be a dog (lying) in the manger.莫學(xué)狗占馬槽不吃草。
Scornful dogs will eat dirty puddings.狗再傲慢也會(huì)吃臟布丁。
A son never thinks his mother ugly,and a dog never shuns its owner’s home however shabby it is.兒不嫌母丑,狗不嫌家貧。
Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.雞蛋未孵出,先別數(shù)小雞。(不要過(guò)早樂(lè)觀。)
The frog in the well knows nothing of the great ocean.井底之蛙,不知大海。
The fox may grow grey, but never good.狐貍毛色可變灰,但是本性難移。
The fox preys farthest from his hole.狐貍捕食,遠(yuǎn)離洞府。(兔子不吃窩邊草。)
When the fox preaches, then take care of your geese.每當(dāng)狐貍說(shuō)教,當(dāng)心鵝群被盜。
The best fish swim near the bottom.好魚(yú)常在水底游。
There’s as good fish in the sea as ever came out of it.海里的好魚(yú)多的是。
If water is noisy, there are no fish in it.咆哮的水中無(wú)魚(yú)。(夸夸其談?wù)邿o(wú)真才實(shí)學(xué)。)。
You cannot run with the hare and hunt with the hounds.不能既和野兔一起跑又和獵狗一起追。(人不應(yīng)兩面討好。)
The tortoise wins the race while the hare is sleeping.兔子睡懶覺(jué),烏龜跑贏了。
You can take a horse to the water, but you can’t make him drink.帶馬到河邊容易,逼馬飲水難。
A good horse cannot be of a bad colour.好馬不會(huì)毛色差。
A horse may stumble on four feet.馬有四條腿,亦有失蹄時(shí)。
A running horse needs no spur. 奔馬無(wú)需鞭策。
Don’t put the cart before the horse. 不要將大車(chē)套在馬前面。(處理問(wèn)題應(yīng)按先后次序,不要本末倒置。)
Hair by hair you will pull out the horse’s tail. 一根一根拔,拔光馬尾巴。(水滴石穿)
The common horse is worst shod. 公用之馬,掌子最差。
Lock the barn door after the horse is stolen. 失馬之后鎖馬廄。(亡羊補(bǔ)牢)
He that makes himself a sheep shall be eaten by the wolf. 甘心做綿羊,必然喂豺狼。
A lazy sheep thinks its wool heavy.懶羊嫌毛重。
One swallow does not make a spring.孤燕不報(bào)春。
If you don’t enter a tiger’s den, you can’t get his cubs.不入虎穴,焉得虎子。
Don’t trust a goat with the kitchen-garden,or a wolf with sheepfold. 不能請(qǐng)羊管菜園,不能請(qǐng)狼管羊圈。
Who keeps company with wolves, will learn to howl.和狼在一起,就會(huì)學(xué)狼叫。
The mouse that has but one hole is quickly taken. 只有一個(gè)洞的老鼠,很快就被抓住。
Man is a wolf to man. 人對(duì)人是狼。(人心狠,人吃人)
A growing youth has a wolf in his belly. 年輕人,在成長(zhǎng),吃起飯來(lái)像餓狼。
A speck of mouse dung will spoil a whole pot of porridge. 一粒老鼠屎,壞了一鍋粥。

A staff is quickly found to beat a dog with. 欲加之罪,何患無(wú)詞。
Love me, love my dog. 愛(ài)屋及烏。
Every dog has his day. 人人皆有得意時(shí)。
Let sleeping dogs lie. 勿惹是生非。
Dog does not eat dog. 同類不相殘。
Never offer to teach fish to swim. 不要班門(mén)弄斧。
It is a silly fish that is caught twice with the same bait. 智者不上兩次當(dāng)。
Don’t ride the high horse. 勿擺架子。
If one sheep leaps over the ditch, all the rest will follow. 榜樣的力量是無(wú)窮的。
It is a poor mouse that has only one hole. 狡兔三窟。
The leopard can never change its spots. 江山易改,本性難移。
可見(jiàn),要想更好的理解習(xí)語(yǔ),就應(yīng)該不斷擴(kuò)充中英歷史文化知識(shí),平時(shí)也應(yīng)該加強(qiáng)對(duì)翻譯理論的積累,不斷提升自身的英語(yǔ)水平。
